Troubleshooting Unknown Device Issues

We’ve seen that sometimes, within LiveViewer, Cambrionix Connect and the Device Manager, a connected device my appear as an ‘Unknown Device’. Some initial first steps to follow:

End point limitation

I would recommend reading our other article on Endpoint Limitations. It’s a bit of a longer read but it’s very worthwhile knowing these limitations with USB technology. Essentially, if you’re running into an Endpoint limitation, you will either need to reduce the number of devices connected, or switch to using USB 2 for (some of) the device connections.

Just note that using USB 2 will limit your charging & data transfer speeds

Trusted Device

Devices need to enable the host pc to connect to it. If on a password-protected device, you may need to unlock the screen before a connection will be allowed. A pop-up should appear asking you to trust the connection. If it didn’t, then just unplug and re-plug the device and it should appear.

Apple Devices

This is related to trusted devices; there is a setting called "USB accessories" for Apple devices. Activating this should reduce the number of times a device will need to be unlocked/trusted. More information can be found at the link below.

Lightning cables

Lightning cables can draw a small amount of current, even when no device is connected to them. This behaviour can cause a USB hub to interpret the cable as a device with a low power draw, resulting in the hub's LEDs turning on. Additionally, in the case of a Cambrionix Connect system, this may lead to the appearance of an "unknown device" in the interface.
